Eco Friendly Sports Stadium

AAMI PARK Melbourne Rectangular Stadium

The stadium is seen as being one of the most eco friendly stadiums in the world. The unique design of triangular cantilever stadium uses 50% less steel than other systems. Rainwater harvesting is also a feature with natural ventilation and lighting.

Green Sports Stadium

Came the Lincoln Financial Field who have become one of the greenest stadiums around. They have done this by adding 14 wind turbines and are in the process of adding more than 11000 solar panels. This is going to generate a lot of power. It will apparently save the Philadelphia Eagles $60 million over the next 20 years.

New Technologies

New technology are something that interest me alot. Constantly new technologies and advances in the building industry are making life easier for the individuals and the users.

This new concept design created by dutch firm Studio Roosegaarde is a smart concept idea where the road surface itself informs the driver of the road conditions as using pictures and unique lighting methods. Although some other the ideas may be a long way away some of the ideas are already starting to be developed.

New Technologies- Micro-algae Green Wall

This year I have been very interested in new technologies within the building industry. I regularly look at technologies that are being developed and is potentially an area of research that I would like to look into next year.

Green walls are something that I have more recently become interested in with the benefits that they can offer and the visual impact that they can have on a building. Whilst browsing the internet I came across the development of a new micro-algae green wall that is under construction in Germany.

The glass louvres are attached to the building and act as shades for the building. Between the glass micro-algae grows and acts as shading for the building. In brighter conditions the micro-algae grows faster therefore providing more shade for the weather conditions. The design not only will have a visual impact put will able produce energy to help power the building.

The façade produces biomass that can be harvested and also captures solar thermal heat. These both will be used to power the building.

Sustainable Stadiums- World Games Stadium Taiwan

This stadium uses thousand of solar panel to power the stadium and it is said to be able to produce enough energy to power 80% of the surrounding area.

Sustainable Stadiums- Dalian Shide Stadium

Sustainability is such an important thing that has to be considered with any building. Sustainability in sport is something that is very important at the moment and is having a major impact on the designs of new stadiums around the world. For my research methods topic I have considered looking at how sustainable and adaptable construction can be transfer into the world of sports.

Dalian Shide Stadium

NBBJ architects have taken sustainability strongly into consideration with there proposal for a new football stadium in China. The unique design sees a stadium that is not totally enclosed but has one side totally open.

The concept behind the design is to connect the outside with the in with the unique design. They plan to use  a number of sustainable elements within the building the one that is most impressive to me is the green walls that will not only have a visual impact but will help with insulation and reduce energy use.

Sustainable Stadium

The Guadalajara football stadium in Mexico designed by architects of Studio Massuad has been desinged to replicate a volcano. It uses such environmentally friendly features such as rainwater harvesting, naturally ventilating parking garage and efficient lighting.

Sustainable Sports Architecture

Before starting my blog I brainstormed some things of interest to me in hope that this would lead me into an area that I would potentially like to research. Although a research area is not fully clear I have decided to start by looking at sporting architecture as these are two passions in my life. As sustainability is a hot topic at the moment I started to look at the relationship between the three areas.

This new football academy for FK Austria Wien youth teams has taken sustainability and eco-friendly architecture into account.

The building includes indoor and outdoor pitches, offices, gym and canteen. One of the interesting parts of th design for me is that part of the building is built underground, I would guess that this means certain energy savings costs when it comes to heating. There will be a lot of thermal benefits from having the building half submerged in the ground.

As you can see from the picture although its underground it still get lots of natural sunlight.

The building boasted radiating wall panels and low temperature heating systems and a rainwater harvesting system which can hold 120000 litres of water which is used to water the outdoor pitches.
